Mini Book Review | If I Stay by Gayle Forman
Umm, I have mixed feelings about this book. I wanted to love the book before I started it but somehow I am disappointed. Perhaps I had huge expectations from the book but now I'm underwhelmed.
Mia, a seventeen year old girl, who has a loving and supportive family, a boyfriend and a huge talent of playing the cello, has an accident and loses all her family. She's in coma but her soul (?) can see and hear everything that is happening around her. This premise has been used in many other books/movies before so it didn't really feel novel for me.
But I loved the mystery around all these happenings. Like, she has no familial problems, no school-related problems, no major boyfriend-related problems, so why is this happening to Mia? Slowly as the story unravels I could understand the book better. I could understand Mia better. As the phrase says 'Looks aren't everything', Mia's picture perfect life is not what it looks like. Mia has her own troubles, her own insecurities, her dilemmas, and the book is about how she is finally able to see all the light through this.
I have often told people, that romance novels are really not my thing, so that's why I'm a bit more critical about it. But no, don't pay heed to me. This one is a beautiful book. This one is the first book in a duology and as I write this, I'm already onto the sequel. Maybe I'll like my current read more since the first book's ending is still unanswered.
